Independent journalism pays off with truth and results

Independent journalism pays off with truth and results

Linda Solomon Wood | Sep 12th, 2014 – National Observer newsroom – I was delighted this week to see an e-mail from the people at Kickstarter saying, “we really love your project!” Staff at the crowdfunding website said they had chosen our Tar Sands Reporting Project video as “Most Socially Conscious” — and one their favourite Canadian projects of the year. A highlight perhaps because our journalistic effort covering the people and politics of Alberta’s oil sands, as well as the industry’s pipeline and tankers offshoots into B.C., is one…

Why VCs Love CrowdFunding?

Why VCs Love CrowdFunding?

Steven A. Cinelli. CrowdfundBeat contributing editor, August 18, 2014, With all the conversation about the perspective of the venture capital industry on the nascent crowdfunding space, it is becoming clear that VCs will be increasingly welcoming platforms that facilitate funding for emerging companies. Stop and think about it. Seed financing has the highest level of failure. The VCs and to some extent the angel community has played that role by providing pre-concept enterprises a bit of juice to test the waters. And as we know, the VCs get refunded based on…

Canada’s On Spec magazine crowdfunding after grant is cut

cropped-onspec-logo_print22

On Spec, Canada’s leading science fiction magazine, faces closure after its Canada Council grant was abruptly, unfairly cancelled. They’re raising funds to keep going. On Spec is a fantastic magazine that I’ve read since its first issue; they were the first magazine to publish any of my work, in a special youth issue in 1988 (I was 17). This is a terrible turn of affairs for the development and nurturing of Canadian science fiction and fantasy talent. http://boingboing.net/2014/08/16/canadas-on-spec-magazine-cro.html

“Peer to Peer Revolution” Crowdfunding, special report by MoneyWeek

“Peer to Peer Revolution” Crowdfunding, special report by MoneyWeek

A letter from MoneyWeek’s Editor John Stepek, CROWDPOWER, How you could make a small fortune from the Peer-to-Peer revolution, I used to read a lot of comics when I was a teenager.I wasn’t a serious obsess about the condition of the comics. I just wanted to read the stories. But hunting them down wasn’t always easy. If I wanted to track down an old copy of 2000AD or a back issue of even a pretty mainstream American comic, I’d take the train into Glasgow and go to a little market just…

Use Crowdfunding to Benefit Your Business and Build Your Brand

Currently, crowdfunding campaign widgets can easily be embedded into web pages to display specific campaigns that are seeking funding. Crowdfunding as a service technology (CFaaST), however, has the power to completely transform existing websites into their own crowdfunding platform. Platforms like FundRazr, who offer Powered By FundRazr, provide simple and quick integration that provides fundraising technology to companies, websites, and individuals who need it.

The benefits of white-label crowdfunding and Powered By FundRazr are vast, but can be broken down into five major categories:

1.    Keep traffic on your site

Instead of marketing campaigns that link away from the destination site, CFaaST keeps the audience in the intended place. Donations can be made, new campaigns can be started, and campaigns can be shared without being redirected to FundRazr or a similar platform.

2.    Free

CFaaST is free with FundRazr. Rather than spending money developing the technology, organizations can partner with portals and benefit from the technology they have developed. Similarly, at certain levels of traffic and campaign starts, businesses can actually develop a new revenue stream from their partnership with FundRazr.

3.    Connect with your community

Websites that encourage entrepreneurs, non-profits, or personal fundraising pursuits can now offer a tool for their community to actually participate. Sites can provide their community members with a means of sharing their pursuits and a similarly provide a support mechanism for followers to support each other.

4.    Speed and Ease

Plugging in crowdfunding capabilities is simple and fast. Integration is quick and takes merely days before Crowdfunding as a Service Technology (CFaaST) will get launched, and businesses and nonprofits alike can empower their ‘crowd’.

5.    Optimal User Experience

CFaaST users get to benefit from the refined and advanced user experience from FundRazr. At the same time, all software upgrades and improvements will automatically be implemented, contributing to the convenient and intuitive integration.

With crowdfunding at already a $5 Billion industry, the emergence of crowdfunding as a service technology has created new way for websites to get their community engaged. There are limitless opportunities for foundations, organizations, and cities to showcase their activity and involvement in fundraising for their community. Crowdfunding also provides the opportunity to take a leadership role in creating a platform to connect, engage, and fund different pursuits.

As quoted by Ivor Tossell of The Globe and Mail, “How do you out-kick Kickstarter, and out-indie Indiegogo?  FundRazr wants to take the next step, and let organizations put crowdfunding onto their own webpages. It’s about building your brand rather than building Indiegogo’s brand.”

EIP picks winners at the expense of fostering innovations, says AIIA CEO

Kye White | July 28, 2014 | startupsmart | Australia – By The federal government’s Entrepreneurs Infrastructure Program picks winners, rather than fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, Australian Information Industry Association chief executive officer Suzanne Campbell says. Campbell is concerned about the boundaries and conditions surrounding the Business Management Stream of the program, which as a consequence doesn’t apply to startups. “The Entrepreneurs Infrastructure Program is focused on more predictable growth, rather than risk takers, innovators and entrepreneurs,” she says. “The point is about whether this program is genuinely intended to…
