Star Citizen crosses $14 million crowdfunding mark

star-citizenThe first ever crowdfunded triple-A game. Wing Commander designer Chris Roberts’ upcoming space epic Star Citizen has now raised more than US$14 million (AU$15.3 million) via crowdfunding.

The money has been gathered using a combination of Kickstarter – where it attracted US$2,134,374 in pledges – and Star Citizen’s official website, where money continues to pour in.

“We can hardly believe it – we’ve already hit the $14 million level!” wrote Roberts in an update.

“We can’t thank you enough for all of the support you have given Star Citizen in recent months. Rest assured, we will be back at work Monday creating the space game of our – and your – dreams.

“Fans are making Star Citizen the first-ever crowdfunded AAA game and we’re very excited about the fact that we get to share the process with you. Together, we are exploring new territory in game development.”

The US$14 million milestone means that a Hibernation Mode and new city will be added to the game, and a “Behind the Scenes of Star Citizen” documentary will be made.

Should the game reach US$15 million, an additional ship class will be included, and a 42-page Upgrade Handbook that walks players through the process of customising and overclocking their ship systems will be shipped to all backers up to that point.

The hugely ambitious Star Citizen is projected to be available on Windows PC in early 2015.
